# How Likely Is It To Win the Lottery?

By November 29, 2011

Three wealth managers have won the Connecticut state Powerball lottery. Timothy C. Davidson, Brandon E. Lacoff and Gregory H. Skidmore have won the largest jackpot - \$254 million - in the state's history.

How likely is it to win the lottery? This is really just a question that requires some basic probability, and formula for combinations. The probability of winning on this particular lottery was slim: 1 in 195,249,054.

This number was calculated based on the structure of the game. Someone wagering money on powerball selects five numbers out of 59, then chooses one powerball from 39. Under these conditions the total number of combinations is
C(59, 5) x C(39, 1) = 195,249,054.

Find out more about how probabilities for the lottery are calculated.
